America is getting old fast. Too fast. The most recent estimate puts the 65 and older crowd at 44.7 million.1 That number is on track to more than double to 98.2 million by 2060.2 Too many planning to hang up the working life have to ask a question that will decide whether the rest of their years will be spent in happy relaxation or greeting customers at the local discount store: how do I retire with no money?
When our government does something wrong we like to know about it, if only because it affirms what we already suspect. Government has a name for admitting mistakes. It’s called “transparency,” a word that makes you think something is going to get fixed when it isn’t.
It’s easy to forget that the role of a good government is not to create more laws or to manage the impossible tangle of regulations and restrictions created by years of self-indulgent lawmaking.
Little or nothing can be accomplished by government without changing a law or making a new one.
I just stumbled across the website for the “Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus.” Liberal lawmakers like to create caucuses for minority causes because it gives them an air of urgency. That last letter in “LGBT” is about as minority as it gets, but that doesn’t mean it can’t generate lots of publicity.
How many seats can we fill on our nation’s free ride train? Family leave, mandatory raises, health care, and free college are all part of a new, sorry dream for America that feels borrowed from failed European economies.
New dream for America is to be more like Europe
Is America such a bad place that imitating Europe is something to strive for?
If someone close to you has died from cancer or if you have been diagnosed, you know all too well that curing cancer is important. Cancer changes lives in ways that can never be repaired. Keeping this in mind, were you amused or offended by the newest grab from our lame duck president for more space in the history books?
For a long time I have been suspicious that emerging from the recession wasn’t good for everybody. It seemed like a positive thing for the president. He said it was what he wanted and still talks obsessively about bailing us out from the “worst economic crisis” since the Depression.
