New York City’s mayoral primary kicked sand in the face of every conservative pundit who declared the Democrat Party DOA after the 2024 election. The stunning success of a candidate who by all appearance is a socialist lunatic proves that radical leftism is alive and well and offers hope for Democrats fleeing even farther left in search of a voice.
Zohran Mamdani stands a good chance of becoming the city’s mayor not because voters were forced to accept him like they were with Governor Kathy Hochul, but because 56% of primary voters chose him to lead their city.
Mamdani isn’t the problem
Politicians are sales professionals. They pander and sell what the market wants to buy. We can’t accuse Mamdani of being a capitalism-hating socialist or even a communist as President Trump suggests because this is what he proudly espouses. It’s not as if he’s shy about his plans for the city or feelings about privately-held wealth or even his racist proclivities. These things define Mamdani’s candidacy and his appeal to voters.
One bad Biden doesn’t doom the Democrat Party
Joe Biden was the Democrat Party’s tipping point. Trump populism stole the attention of Americans tired of being hurt by a feckless White House that didn’t seem to care about the pain inflicted by high prices, illegal immigration, cowardice on the global stage, antisemitism on college campuses, gender insanity in schools, and flagrant anti-Americanism that assumed voters despised the values our country stands for just as much as many radical Democrats.
After Trump’s big win, Republicans gleefully declared the demise of the directionless Democrat Party. Nothing could be further from the truth. Biden was a mentally challenged, not present president who lost the trust of voters who cared about their own families more than the illegal foreign nationals vociferously courted by the administration.
After Democrats discarded democracy and denied voters their primary choice, Kamala Harris presented a phony, ridicule-ready public personae unworthy of respect. If her running mate Tim Walz had donned a Bozo the Clown outfit for the campaign trail, it would only have improved their chances.
None of these things doomed the Democrat Party. Instead, they empowered radicals to weaponize against America.
While conservatives talked Democrat demise, the restive left responded to Trump’s win with anger, violence, and domestic terrorism. The issue was not, as many commentators surmised, that Democrats were too radical. They were not radical enough. Criminal foreign nationals, antisemitic activists, Hamas terrorism, and men trouncing women on the playing field were the poster children for a left more radicalized against our nation and values than ever.

Freedom and liberty are our right, but there is a catch
America’s Founders believed that freedom and liberty are unalienable rights that don’t depend on the solicitude or good will of government and politicians, but there was a catch. They also vested the citizens of their new country with the responsibility to protect these rights because above all things, Americans own our government and bear responsibility for what it does.
Voting our choice in free and fair elections is the foundation that supports our political system, so what happens when citizens disavow their responsibility to protect freedom, liberty, and the values that comprise the idea of America?
When that happens we get politicians like Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) who this week called ICE agents terrorists, socialist Green New Deal dummy Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), divisive anti-white Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) who ridiculed her state’s governor for being in a wheelchair, mayors like Boston’s Michelle Wu and Chicago’s Brandon Johnson, and governors like JB Pritzker, Tim Walz, and Gavin Newsom.
Now we have Zohran Mandami, who to his dubious credit won with an agenda that trumps every destructive radical on the Democrat Party’s playing field and veers into the realm of pure socialism.
Nearly two and a half centuries after America’s founding the citizens of our largest and arguably greatest city, a metropolis famous for Lady Liberty, tapped this radical leftist who pushed the Democrat Party agenda to its limits by advocating anti-white, race-based taxation, anti-Israel “globalize the Intifada” antisemitism, and encroaching government control of food stores.
Pain is a powerful, perhaps the best teacher. Being warned about something can’t compete with experiencing it first-hand. Your mom probably told you that touching a hot stove burner was a bad idea, but how did you learn not to do it?
That hot stove awaits New York if voters buy what Mamdani is selling. Few would argue that poverty doesn’t hurt except, perhaps, the politician who sold it to erstwhile Americans willing to hand over the responsibility for their lives to a snake oil socialist offering free public transit, frozen rent, government-run grocery stores, free childcare, taxation based on skin color, and policing by social workers.
Whether or not it was his intent, John Carpenter’s 1981 classic Escape from New York warned where the city is headed. The movie portrayed NYC as a prison and deterrent to be avoided at all costs. Socialism doesn’t work and neither do policies that pander to the morally destitute elements of our society looking for a pass on laws they find inconvenient and that Democrat Party radicals insist are unfair and unjust.
Freedom and liberty work. They made America great. This Fourth of July every American should thank Zohran Mamdani for protecting our freedom and liberty by reminding us what might happen if we trade these values and our responsibility as free individuals for the cowardice endorsed by Joe Biden, radical Democrats, and now a socialist from the shadows proffering goods no city can afford.
