Stealing from the government used to be a crime. We called it “fraud.” There were all sorts of ways people defrauded the government. They took advantage of welfare benefits, tax and securities regulations, health care entitlements, and a multitude of other laws and programs ripe for abuse.
What better deception to enforce government control than convincing the people that tightening the screws on states is for their protection? The pursuit of government control over states is liberal hypocrisy at its best. We have created a vicious spiral of spending and dependence by making sure that everything begins and ends in Washington, especially when it comes to providing education and health care.
The DACA program is a federal scam that began with a memo announcing Homeland Security’s surprise, hands-off prosecutorial discretion policy. This outrage to Congress and our separation of powers was quickly followed by the White House’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals order.
There wasn’t much we could do about the Recovery Act. Taxpayers were stuck with the waste, the pork, and the tricky math about jobs saved or created. It was hard to prove that some of it didn’t help a little and we don’t hear much about the bill these days because there is a better target crashing and burning while you read this.
Our nation was shamed on Monday. Most of us probably didn’t hear Barack Obama’s speech but if you felt a little uncomfortable as you went about your routine, make no mistake. That feeling was shame for giving up a little more of the freedom we took for granted.
