Why do we deserve government handouts when life hits the skids? Because politicians say we do. It’s that simple. America owes you nothing, which is why it is so important for pols to blur the distinction between our country and our government.
Can we call a retiree entitlement “welfare” if seniors help to pay for it? Blameful fingers have been pointed at the budgetary havoc wreaked by public employee pensions (see: Illinois Pensions Make Bad Teachers Look Worse). Social Security, the big retirement entitlement for seniors and anyone else who can get their hands on the money, is going to do the same thing on a national scale.
Has the Speaker of the House we applauded three short years ago given up the good fight? Is the House leadership so intimidated by accusations about Tea Party radicals from the progressive extremists that rule the Democratic Party that they forgot that the word “compromise” no longer exists?
That Congress’s newest rotten deal will be regarded as a bipartisan budget victory if it passes the Senate tells you everything you need to know about bad government in 2013. Our senators and representatives are preparing to head home with heads held high when they should be apologizing to the American people for a year of failed bills and bad deals.
Is it the season, the now-traditional December battle over extending unemployment benefits, fiscal doomsday returning on January 15, or Friday’s deadline for legislators to accomplish the impossible and agree on spending? Whichever you choose, the White House is making sure income inequality is front and center as the midterm battle lines are drawn.
Reading this will make you angry if you earn minimum wage, if you are an Illinois teacher waiting for retirement, a student counting on loan forgiveness, a bottom-feeding activist or organizer, or an illegal immigrant convinced you deserve everything. It should.
When we take pride in America while rationalizing what goes on in our nation’s capitol as partisan politics and sloppy big government, are we wrong? If a decision on whether our country deserves to exist was based on the shameful display in Washington over the past two weeks, America would be gone.
