First it was Barack Obama. Now New York Senator Charles Schumer has taken a turn at showing his disrespect for our highest court. Any sliver of doubt as to how pivotal the immigrant vote is for the Democratic Party was erased with Schumer’s announcement of a “legislative response” if the Supreme Court dares to give a thumbs up to Arizona’s SB 1070 immigration law.
Democrats and illegal immigrants are natural allies. Here are five offensive traits they have in common.
1. They despise laws that stand in their way.
This is a no-brainer when it comes to illegal immigrants. If they had any regard for America’s laws they would either be back where they belong or they would be in the U.S. legally. Democrats have successfully used Eric Holder to strike down laws like SB 1070, but recently they let caution fly and showed Americans their innate disregard for our highest judicial body. Senator Schumer’s grandstanding threat for a legislative end run around the Supreme Court was the perfect complement to the president’s comments about the court’s pending decision on health care reform.
2. They expect others to pay for their problems.
Democrats and the White House created their Buffett Rule fantasy (see: The Obama Sufferit Rule: A Fix for Spending, Deficit, and Debt) because it makes for better press than being embarrassed by House Republicans who refuse to indulge Democratic spending habits. Illegal immigrants have a lot less legitimacy than elected officials, but they also expect us to spend on their problems. Their presence forces us to educate their kids, and they become unhappy when we refuse to use that free education as an excuse to give legal status to “DREAMers.” They also force us to find ways to subsidize their health care because emergency rooms and other components of our health care system cannot turn them away. Illegal immigrants drive, but when they are involved in accidents the damage is our loss. The only thing more offensive than paying to make life better for illegals is listening to Democrats defend their freeloading while using the Justice Department to make sure the abuse of taxpayers continues.
3. Their leader shows disdain for America’s laws.
Most of us understand that we have three branches of government for a reason. President Obama has a history of ignoring Congress and has now given us pause to wonder how far he will go and what will happen if the Supreme Court takes a dim view of his health care law. Senator Schumer deserves credit for trumping the president when he put his cards on the table on behalf of illegal immigrants. The senator showed Americans once and for all who and what matters to the Democratic Party. Not surprisingly, our government’s separation of powers did not make the cut.
Illegal immigrants have been told time and again that our president is behind them. He is willing to use every coercive measure at his disposal to ensure their happiness and win the votes of their supporters, even at the expense of taxpayers. This is a great time to be an illegal thriving in America. It is a bad time to be paying the tab.
4. They overestimate their usefulness.
Democrats are to blame for repeatedly encouraging illegals by telling them of the vital role immigrants can play in saving our economy from ruin. This is especially important news to those lucky enough to not only be illegal, but to belong to the president’s favorite ethnic group (see: SB 1070: Should We Entitle or Profile Illegal Immigrants?).
Are illegals really useful, or are they just an annoyance that costs us money? Will Americans starve without illegal workers to pick our crops? Will we be able to figure out how to mow our lawns, clean our houses, and take care of our kids on our own? Sure we will. If we are handed another four years of Barack Obama, unemployed Americans might be willing to take those especially nasty jobs we keep hearing we are too lazy to perform. We might even figure out how to do those jobs better with the labor and know-how of American citizens.
Democrats? They are even less useful than illegal immigrants. Remarks like this from Senator Schumer underscore just how useless and damaging Democrats can be:
The Supreme Court should find the Arizona law unconstitutional, but if it doesn’t, Congress will be ready.¹
Really, Senator Schumer?
5. They refuse to just go away.
We don’t want illegals here, and we don’t want Democratic rule in Washington, either. Like illegals, the needs of Democrats are too much of a drain. If we can just hold out a little longer maybe the Supreme Court can lend us a helping hand with the illegal immigrant problem. A few months after that, maybe voters can help America with our Democrat problem.
