With the White House focused on securing Barack Obama’s legacy despite a rocky second term, birth control and unemployment benefits should be the least of the president’s worries. American Ideals and Values
It hit me while I watched the FBI agent with the perpetual five o’clock shadow riding home on the subway, elbow to elbow with other bedraggled working class commuters. Having endured several hours of The Wolf of Wall Street’s antihero drinking, drugging, and womanizing his way through untold millions of ill-gotten gain only to run afoul of this stalwart, middle class government employee, I realized that this wasn’t about financial sector corruption.
Americans deserve better than the litany of bad laws that kick in every January. We start every year shaking our heads in disbelief at new laws and regulations that scream legislative abuse and special interest pandering and pose a real danger to those unfamiliar with new infractions and their penalties.
Love brings people together, but sometimes anger works better. There is nothing quite like the feeling of getting screwed by the government whether you are a liberal, a conservative, an empty-headed fence sitter, or the politician doing the screwing. Congress likes to have fun pitting liberals and conservatives against each other, which gives us common ground.
Veterans are an inconvenience for our government. When they have done their duty they don’t go away. Supportive programs and benefits have to be funded and administered, something Washington has trouble with. This is good for both of our political parties.
