Life is cruel. Harry Reid finally made a statement with which many of us agree, albeit through a hired mouthpiece, suggesting that the Ground Zero Mosque should be located somewhere other than Ground Zero. In return, the senator has been harangued with accusations that he is distancing himself from the president out of fear for his reelection campaign.
Americans are arrogant. Our country is young, and has played a decisive role in world events for a very brief period. U.S. economic power is already under fire from China, which has assumed a pivotal role in the world economy, purchased enormous amounts of our debt, and stands ready to bury our manufacturing sector. Nevertheless, we maintain the delusion that fate smiles on us, and that our nation will reign forever because of who we are and what we believe in.
Today’s report shows our teachers, police officers, firefighters, and nurses are still feeling the worst of the Bush recession — while Republican leaders demean them as ‘special interests’ and try to block legislation that will grow our economy.

July’s abysmal employment report confirmed the stalled recovery and fed fears of a second recession.
July’s jobs numbers reflect, in part, expected losses related to the census winding down. But the fact is, we’ve now added private sector jobs every month this year, instead of losing them, as we did for the first seven months of last year. And that’s a good sign.

There has been too much agenda-laden discussion lately over whether the threat of spillover violence from Mexico to our border states is real, or a right-wing fabrication. The Obama administration’s curious strategy supports Mexico’s efforts to quash cartels while providing minimalist funding for our own border security, and abuses the legal arena to prevent states from protecting themselves.
